1. Set the stage: Prepare a clean, safe space.
Choose a soft, clean surface like a carpet or rug. Avoid hard floors, as they can scuff soles and make them appear worn.
Clear the area of hazards. Move sharp items, or anything that could accidentally mark the shoes.
2. Dress for the occasion
Wear the right socks. Match the socks you’d typically wear with the shoes to get an accurate feel for the fit.
Test your full outfit. If you’re styling the shoes with a specific outfit / occasion, now’s the time to try it on together!
3. Handle with care
Unbox gently. Remove any packaging carefully, noting how it’s arranged to make repacking easier if needed.
Inspect before wearing. Check for tags, stickers, or protective materials. Keep them intact while trying on.
For Oxfords, Derby’s, Monk shoes and boots, open the laces fully before inserting your foot. This will minimise creasing on the vamp (across the top of your toes).
For Loafers, use a shoe horn to gently slide your foot into shoe. This will protect the back of the shoe from damage.
4. Walk with caution
Short strides, soft steps. Take a few steps on your prepared surface, paying close attention to how the shoes feel.
Avoid twisting or bending. Don’t test flexibility too aggressively, as this can leave creases or marks, which can result in returning the shoes impossible.
5. Check the Fit
Ensure the shoes are snug and supportive but not tight or pinching. Check for adequate toe space and heel grip.
Pay attention to any pinching or discomfort. it’s better to find out now than after extended wear!
You should NOT be able to fit your index finger between your heel and the back of the shoes when your foot is inside.
Your toes should NOT be at the end of the shoes.
A little natural heel slip can be expected with new shoes. This is fine, and will reduce through wear, once the shoes mould to your feet over time.
6. Keep the return window open
Don’t wear them outside. Even a quick trip down the garden path will make them non-returnable.
Time your test. Try them on soon after receiving them, leaving enough time to return them if needed.
7. Repack like a pro
If you decide they’re not the perfect fit, repack them just as you received them. Replace all packaging materials, such as tissue paper and inserts, and secure the box.
8. Celebrate or re-order
If they’re perfect, congratulations! Wear them in with confidence. (You look great)!
If not, return them knowing you’ve preserved their perfect condition.
